The most important movement in favour of the Queen has already been commenced in the "loyal and affectionate" addresses of York, the city of London, Westminster, the borough of Southwark, &c. The address of Preston, couched in the warmest language of devotion and reverence, was signed in a few hours by several thousands of the inhabitants of that place. On the presentation of the London address the Common Council chamber was filled with well attired ladies waving their handkerchiefs in token of obeisance and sympathy ; and one lady, it is related, knelt before her majesty and ejaculated a fervent prayer for her welfare! The people hailed her enthusiastically : the Benefit-Societies marched in honour of the occasion, with flags and music: her horses were unharnessed. and worthy John Bull yoked himself in their place, and drew in triumph a woman against whom his government had just preferred an indictment for a course of life as vile and scandalous as that of the worst of brothels. It is a curious contrast, the proceedings and design of the King and Ministry on the one hand, and the dispositions and manifestations of towns, and corporations, and populace on the other ; especially if we look to the probable issue of the trial before the Peers,—a sentence confirmatory of accusations the most disgraceful to which her sex could be subjected. "Every wise Jonathan" will we presume, know how to draw the true moral from all this, and learn to content himself with the humility of his republican lot.
