Mrs. Georgia Caldwell Smith, associate professor of mathematics at Spelman College, has recently been notified of her designation as a National Science Foundation fellowship.
The fellowship was granted to enable Mrs. Smith to carry out a 12-month Faculty Fellow for 1959-1960. The program of study, June, 1959, to June, 1960, toward the Ph. D. degree in mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh. It carries a stipend which approximately salary for that period of time.
Mrs. Smith completed her undergraduate work at the University of Kansas where she received the A.B. degree in mathematics with election to Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Mu Epsilon. She also received her M.A. degree in mathematics from the University of Kansas before coming to Spelman College, her first teaching position. Subsequently, she studied toward the doctor's degree at the University of Chicago. Mrs. Smith taught at Lincoln University, Mo., and the Alabama State College, Montgomery, before returning to the Spelman College faculty in 1945.
Mrs. Smith's memberships in professional organizations include the American Mathematical Society, The Mathematical Association of America, and The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Mrs. Smith is the wife of Dr. Barnett F. Smith, professor of biology at Spelman College, and the mother of Barnett F. Smith, Jr., Morehouse College student.
