Will Then Speak at City Hall Park; Goes Also to the County Seat.
In addition to observing Easter Monday with church services, street parades and feasts, Hungarians of this city and vicinity are today celebrating a visit of Count Mihaly von Karolyi. The honored guest will be met by a delegation from this city at South Plainfield about 4 o'clock this afternoon and is scheduled to arrive here at 4:30 o'clock about which time he will speak in city hall park.
His opening remarks will be in the English language and he will conclude his talk in his native tongue. It is expected that he will be in this city about half an hour, at the conclusion of which time he will be hurried to New Brunswick by automobile, where he will spend about a similar length of time and then proceed to Trenton, where he is scheduled to speak tonight.
Leading members of the general arrangement committee for the thirty Hungarian societies in charge of the plans, left here shortly before 3 o'clock this afternoon in automobiles for South Plainfield. Among them were Rev. Francis Gross, chairman of the general committee, Frank Magyar and Arthur Reichman, his assistants. Count Karolyi is expected at South Plainfield about 4 o'clock. He will be given a place in one of the automobiles and all speed possible will be made to reach this city.
As a result of the double celebration, many factories in this part of the county are crippled for the want of laborers today. The slackness was felt most seriously in the large smelting works. A large proportion of laborers employed at the Raritan Copper Works were off duty and it was announced there that they proposed to work next Sunday instead of today. The celebrants gathered at places of worship and halls early this morning and a number of parades were held before noon.
The Church of Our Lady of Hungary in Cortlandt street was crowded with worshippers before noon and these with others marched to the Magyar Reformed church in Kirkland Place where other services were conducted. A banquet followed in Columbia hall at State and Commerce streets at 2 o'clock this afternoon.
According to the program finally laid out today, Count Karolyi will speak from a platform in City Hall park at 4:30 o'clock this afternoon. He will be introduced by Rev. Francis Gross and will be welcomed by Mayor Fred Garretson. Owing to the limited time for his visit, he will not be the guest of honor at a banquet, as it has first been proposed. His speech will be as in accordance with his campaign plan, being for the unison of Hungarians, Magyars and Slav to make Hungary more independent of Austria. The democratic count has repeatedly stated that it is wished to extend suffrage of his native country and give the right to vote to every male above the age of twenty-one years.
Hungary, he states, has at present a very restricted suffrage, enjoyed by property holders. A more homogeneous people and their own army is wanted, he declared.
