Funds of Harvard College. The funds belonging to Harvard College are $504,882.23. Of these the funds, given wholly by individuals, and specifically appropriated by them, and over which the corporation have no control, except to apply them according to the will of the donors, are, for the salaries of professors, $151,626.45: for the purchase of books, $6,718.69; for museum, &c, $6,720.78; for theological purposes, $38,134.18; for the law school, $17,943.63; for botanical garden and natural history, $11,456.64; for treasurer, $520; for Dudlean lecture, $465.77; for assisting indigent scholars, $26,479.77; for prizes, $5,993.88; for permanent tutors, (arising from the West Boston bridge annuity,) $26,578.14. Total $292,637.93. Funds from which the College derives no benefit, but merely pays over the interest, as required by the donors, $17,769.55, (viz: Sarah Winslow's donation, the whole income of which is paid to the minister and schoolmaster of Tyngsborough, $4,769.55; David Williams' legacy, for preaching the gospel among the Indians at Cotuit and Edgartown, $13,000.) Funds hereafter to revert to the College, but the income of which is to be paid to the widows of the testators during their lives, $45,751; bad debts of no value, $4,103.52; property producing no income, $5,184.61; required for the ordinary purposes of treasurer and steward, $5,000; leaving for the general purposes of the College the sum of $134,436.62, (the whole income of which is required to keep up the present system of instruction, and to keep down the charge of education, at its present rate, to the students.—Boston Evening Transcript.
