A letter from Pottsville on Friday states that only four collieries out of the one hundred and ten controlled by the great Philadelphia and Reading Railroad monopoly are in operation. A few more may resume this week, but most expect to remain idle until September 1st. The suspension was the act of the Railroad Co., which adopted the simple device of not furnishing cars to the operators. The reason for suspension is stated to be that the five or six leading companies which combine and control the coal trade have an agreement by which each is allowed to ship a certain proportion of the entire tonnage of each month, and no more. The Reading Co. found that it was carrying more than its quota for August, and hence its agreement with the other companies compelled it to stop; and as it was not bound to give a reason for its conduct, it did not give any save "the lack of demand for coal," which is probably true enough. The coal trade is always dull in August.

Event Details
The Philadelphia and Reading Railroad suspended operations at most collieries controlled by it by not furnishing cars to the operators. The suspension resulted from an agreement among the five or six leading companies controlling the coal trade, limiting each to a certain proportion of the monthly tonnage. The Reading Co. had carried more than its quota for August and thus stopped. The company stated the reason as lack of demand for coal, which is true as the coal trade is always dull in August.
