Brother Actors Put Stop to Neat Scheme of John Mason.
Actors who travel have all sorts of funny stories to tell of their experiences on the road. In many cases their good times have birth in their own happy dispositions. One of them was telling of her hardships at the average hotels throughout the country, where a professional rate is made of $1.50 a day.
"We were packed away under the roof, two in a room, which was all well enough, and herded at one table in the dining room, where the bill of fare was carefully edited for our benefit. We didn't object so much to that, but when one day we got a breakfast bill on which were eggs we were promptly informed that it was a mistake, that the house didn't furnish eggs to actors.
"For a long time our leading man always managed to get a good room to himself, although he took advantage of the $1.50 a day rate. We couldn't make it out until we set a watch upon him. We then discovered that he delayed his arrival at the hotels till we were all located, when he would stray in with his bag and register as 'John B. Mason, New York.' The clerk, mistaking him for a commercial traveler, always gave him the best room in the house. Then we spiked his gun. We notified the clerks in advance that our leading man, Mr. Mason, was coming presently, and to save him a room. Any old thing would do, as he wasn't particular. The joke was too good to keep, and nobody enjoyed it more than Mason."
