Lawrence, Mass., February 25. The Roman Catholic churches under the control of the Augustinian fathers, were crowded at each service Sunday. At St. Mary's church Rev. C. E. McEsery, superior of the American branch of the Augustinians order, said he would be prepared soon to give a detailed statement of the finances. The church secretary would leave nothing undone to meet the obligations. He considered the mortgages on the church property a comparatively slight inconvenience only a matter for the serious consideration of interested depositors. He said the society's indebtedness was between $400,000 and $500,000, but with the receipts from the orders in three churches and two chapels in Lawrence and Methuen, with extraordinary efforts he hoped to meet the financial obligations in a few years. He expressed the utmost confidence that Catholics of Lawrence would subscribe according to their means to thus rid the church from all tied burdens. Those using the church had no desire to see it in the hands of New York, Pennsylvania and Boston Jews. He said he would leave no stone unturned to meet the people's demands and would unite all sects in the city to join hands in the good work.
