Fire. The alarm of fire yesterday morning about 8 o'clock, was caused by the breaking out of a fire in the roof of the three story brick building on the north east corner of Pratt and Commerce streets. The lower story is occupied by Mr. C. C. Egerton, Jr., as a lottery and exchange office, and by Mr. William S. Justis as a jewelry establishment. The chimney was on fire, and communicated a spark to the roof, which was entirely burnt off, and the upper story much damaged. The house belonged to Mr. John Merrett, and was fully insured in the Equitable office. Mr. Justis, who occupied the upper stories as a dwelling, was the only occupant who suffered any damage, and that was in his furniture, to the amount of some $200—not insured. Egerton's "ever lucky" office was lucky enough to sustain no damage whatever. An unfortunate cat was observed on the roof during the height of the fire, endeavoring to make its escape from the flames, but on a fireman turning a stream of water on it, to keep it from burning, it turned around and sprang into the flames, perishing. Our energetic and active firemen saved the building from destruction.
