LOS ANGELES, Aug. 29. (U.P.)—Alfred E. Smith, former candidate for the presidency, struck a blow today at his old foe in the Democratic party, William Gibbs McAdoo, by supporting the candidacy of Justus F. Wardell for the United States senate.
McAdoo is opposing Wardell for the Democratic senatorial nomination at the California primaries tomorrow.
Smith's action also was an indication that he intends to campaign for Governor Roosevelt, as Wardell, long a leader of California Democracy, headed Roosevelt's campaign at the last presidential primaries.
In those primaries McAdoo won the California delegation for Speaker John Garner.
Smith appealed to his followers in California to vote for Wardell "in the best interests of the party."
William Jennings Bryan, Jr., son of late "Commoner" and a leader of the bone-dry Democrats, also joined the group opposed to McAdoo today. Despite the fact that Wardell is a wet, Bryan gave the San Franciscan his endorsement.
