Full Text
On Wednesday morning his Excellency the Governor and Suite visited the Fortifications, and reviewed the troops at the several islands in the Harbor. In the course of the tour, names were given to the forts on Bedlow's and Ellis's Islands: the former was named Fort Wood, after Lieut. Col. Wood of the Engineers, an officer of distinguished merit, who constructed the works on that island, and who fell in the brilliant sortie of Fort Erie, and the latter was named Fort Gibson, after Lieut. Col. Gibson who fell gallantly fighting in the same affair. The admirable order in which these fortifications are kept, and the truly soldier-like discipline observed, are such as to reflect the highest credit on Colonel House and Captain Swift, who have them in command.
