Messrs. GALES & SEATON:
I met with the enclosed lines in the hands of an ingenious friend. The subject and the merit of the lines justify me in requesting you to give them a corner in your paper.

LINES
WRITTEN ON THE 3D OF MARCH, 1817.
In mellow'd glory t'wards the Western Main,
Now Sol descends with slowly-flowing rein,
Leaving the Earth immers'd in dewy tears,
Till his returning light dispel her fears :
Thus, from Columbia's hallowed Chair of State,
Descends her faithful Son with solemn gait,
To vales sequester'd and heart-wished retreat,
His high command and destined term complete.
Content serene. and long protracted age,
With health attend the Venerable Sage!
Uno arulso, non deficit alter
Aureus.—VIRG.
Fourth of March in the morning—
Now in the East, the rising day behold.
Emerging bright, from clouds of burnish'd gold!
Their genial warmth his youthful rays impart,
Pervade the Earth and gladden every heart.
CAELERA POSTEA.
