WINTER NOTES.
Information Concerning Jackets and Blouses—Popularity of Velvet.
Some jackets are made of velvet, but cloth has, as usual, the preference. Jackets are often rich and very elegant, heavy embroidery being one of the leading features in their decorations, but they are nevertheless kept somewhat subdued in character.
The revers and collar are frequently in velvet of some decided shade, contrasting brilliantly with the beige, mastic, gray or dark tint of the body of the garment.
Blouse jackets are being received with more graciousness than were the short, straight sacks which Paris tried to force upon a reluctant public last year. These blouses are only suitable for slender figures, as the baggy effect, particularly in the back, makes a full figure appear clumsy. On a slight figure the fullness is pleasing, and these blouses are made quite elaborate and trimmed in all sorts of ways with bands of ostrich plumage, chinchilla or blue fox, with jeweled buttons, lace and passementerie.
Velvet is an exceedingly fashionable material. It is worn in plaids, stripes and all fancy weaves, as well as plain, and corduroy is also largely used for bodices. Moire velvet is very beautiful, and is employed for both millinery and gowns, as is shirred velvet also, but this latter is less pleasing in effect, as velvet is too heavy a material to look well gathered.
Broche silks, having figures in strong relief, heavily ribbed silks and poplins of all sorts are enjoying great vogue.
The illustration given today shows a coat and a gown for a girl of 15 years. The coat is of light brown cloth in the redingote style. It opens at the right side of the skirt under a panel of chestnut brown plush. The bodice folds over diagonally and buttons at the left side, having a collar and revers of plush. The plain sleeves have plush cuffs. The gown of green cloth is cut in tabs around the foot of the skirt over darker green velvet, the tabs being fastened down by emerald buttons. The blouse bodice of green silk, to match the skirt, is partly covered by a bolero of green velvet, trimmed with emerald buttons. The close sleeves have velvet cape.
