Full Text

Our readers will perceive what the National Intelligencer says upon the subject of an armistice. We are sorry to add, that the current of opinion sets much against that event. Governor Prevost has signified distinctly, as we are informed, to our government, that he is willing to enter into an armistice as far as his power extends; but which does not go beyond Canada and Nova-Scotia. It of course depends on the disposition of, and powers given to Admiral Cochrane, to conclude a general armistice.

It is to be feared that the credulous people, have been once more gulled by the supporters of administration. The democratic papers and indeed all the party generally affected to believe that an armistice would take place; and they managed the matter very well, but whether "the catch has been compassed" or not a few days will determine. The Loan and the New-York elections may have been influenced by the belief that an armistice would take place. Cunning may do for some time, but it will be exposed, and despised in the long run.
