WHAT MADE HER MAD.
An Extract from the Book on Sara Bernhardt.
The libelous book written by Mme. Colombier has reached this office. Some portions of it are unfit for publication. Here is the extract which doubtless caused Bernhardt to invest in a riding whip and use it:
"Her setting up as a beauty is too absurd. In the first place, she has a squint in one of her eyes. The natural color of her hair is red, which she has dyed brown. It is so thin on the crown of her head that she is almost bald. I bought her first switches of false hair. Her teeth are false, and her complexion, with the paint and powder washed off, is horrible. She is so freckled that African descent is suggested. Her figure is wretched; but I have taught her how to dress so as to conceal her physical deformities. Her feet are the largest and ugliest I ever saw. They are larger than most men's, so big that the largest size in ladies' shoes are too small for her. She could not get anything like a fit until she reached Chicago. Even the heels did not project sufficiently for her. So now she has her boots built at Chicago, and the rear extensions put on them by a cordwainer at New Orleans, whose specialty is plantation boots for the colored girls of Louisiana. Her slippers are models of Chinese junks imported from Canton. The first decent dress she ever wore I designed for her. In fact, I do not think she even had a presentable suit which I did not. She has no taste, and is positively color-blind. If she had the selection of her own wardrobe and the money to indulge her savage inclinations she would be a perfect fright. She has only two or three articles of genuine jewelry. The Bernhardt manners at table are atrocious. She has a frightful appetite, and uses her knife and fork indiscriminately—at least she did when I first made her acquaintance."
