CIVIL DEFENSE TALKS MADE TO WOMAN'S CLUB

Benefit Party Planned For Feb. 23: Food Sales in March; Officers Elected

Instructions on the operation of a Ground Observer Corps were given the Manteo Woman's Club Tuesday evening when they met in the Community Building. Instructors were Sgt. Vaughn and Sgt. Drew of the Durham Filter Center. They were presented by R. S. Smith, Mrs. Smith being chairman of the program committee for the evening.

Mrs. Francis Meekins presided in the absence of the president, Mrs. D. E. Evans. The hymn-of-the-month, "I Love Thy Kingdom Lord" was discussed by Mrs. Rennie Williamson. Mrs. Williamson also reported progress on the organization of a band and advised that the youngsters who signed up for instruction were being taken care of by Mitchell Gallop and Wilford Wise. Miss Mollie Fearing reported that the club will hold a benefit card party on February 23 in the Hotel Fort Raleigh. Tickets are now on sale and can be secured from any club member. A food sale will be sponsored each Saturday in March.

Officers were elected as follows: president. Mrs. Camille Podolski; vice-president, Mrs. Wayland Fry; corresponding secretary, Mrs. Ralph Umphlett; treasurer, Miss Mollie Fearing: board member at large, Mrs. Elmer V. Midgett.

Mrs. Williamson urged all members to write to the county representative in Raleigh, backing House Bill No. 110. which would place public school music more easily within reach of students in the smaller schools.

Cake and coffee were served by the hostesses for the evening. Miss Bessie Draper. Mrs. Elmer V. Midgett and Mrs. Helen D. Ward.
