Parnassian Spring.
A New Song.
Now with joy ye blooming fair,
And join the federal throng;
Let industry attend the choir,
Your beauties to prolong.
Since peace has blest this happy land,
And government succeeds;
Let virtue ever take command,
Of all your future deeds.
Let Manufactures now employ,
Your chief domestic care;
So blooming that the greatest joy,
May ever be your share.
Commerce is longing here to reign,
And fix an endless throne;
To make Columbia's daughters blest,
With happiness unknown.
'Tis commerce hails Columbia's fair.
And bids them now improve,
With industry their present care;
Nor think of wanton love.
To them as patrons, and as guides,
She promises a store;
As rich as ever India's tides,
Or Peru mountains bore.
Come first, ye rich exert your pow'r,
Add courage to the rest;
Cheer hope, that ever blooming flow'r,
Which makes the needy blest.
Come too, ye self-sufficient fair,
And bid the toilet cease:
Let spinning wheel and needle share,
To crown your country's peace.
So shall the bard in future song,
While years unnumber'd roll;
Your patriotism safe prolong,
Till ruin seize the whole.
