M. Custine has met with some disadvantage in Germany, of which he has given an account to the Convention in a long letter. It appears that the French garrison at Frankfort, consisting of 4 battalions, was partly betrayed by the commander, and partly by the inhabitants, who opened three gates, at once, to the Prussians, and fired on the garrison.
Two of these battalions, consisting of 1000 or 1100 men, were put to the sword; M. Custine, advancing towards the city, during the action, in the presence of a superior number of Prussians, saved the two other battalions. and remained in sight of the city.
The Prussians and Hessians in the neighbourhood are more numerous than his army, and are endeavoring to surround it: but he has since gained some advantages in point of situation, and apprehends no harm.
The Executive Council, holding this conduct of the inhabitants of Frankfort to be treacherous, during a negotiation, have put into confinement the commissioners from that city, who were at Paris to solicit a remission of the fine imposed upon it.
Two Princes of the house of Nassau having secretly sent assistance to the enemies of France, after they had received a safeguard from M. Custine, their dominions have been taken possession of by detachments from his army.

M. Custine reported to the Convention a disadvantage in Germany: French garrison of 4 battalions at Frankfort betrayed by commander and inhabitants who opened gates to Prussians and fired on garrison. Custine advanced and saved two battalions amid superior Prussian forces, remaining near the city. Prussians and Hessians outnumber his army and attempt encirclement, but he gained situational advantages. Executive Council deemed Frankfort inhabitants treacherous during negotiations and confined their Paris commissioners seeking fine remission. Detachments from Custine's army seized dominions of two Nassau princes for aiding France's enemies after receiving safeguard.
