Only $11,000 Cut In Budget Assured; Other Cuts Likely To Be Voted Down, 3 To 2

The City Commission will ignore many of the recommendations of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Merchants and Taxpayers' League and City Commissioner Louis Carbonell for reductions in the proposed budget, it was learned today. The commission will adopt the 1947 budget tomorrow night.

Carbonell told The Citizen this morning that at an informal session of the commission Friday, he learned that roughly no more than $11,000 will be slashed from the proposed record-breaking appropriation of $562,510.

Meanwhile, Paul Albury, grocer and former city councilman, called a meeting of all merchants and taxpayers for tonight at 8:00 o'clock in the County Courthouse to form a permanent organization known as the Merchants and Taxpayers League, or similar title.

The gathering will hear a report from Joe Pearlman, chairman of the committee which recommended to the City Commission last Tuesday a $33,000 reduction in the proposed budget. The Jaycees recommended a $22,000 cut and Carbonell $21,000.

Officers will be elected and a committee to represent the league at the commission meeting tomorrow night will be named.

Carbonell said that he was sticking to his guns regarding the budget slashes he had advocated, totaling some $21,000. He said that it appears that the commission will: (1) Authorize purchase of another car or motorcycle for the police force; (2) authorize an assistant for City Attorney J. Lancelot Lester; (3) raise Lester's salary from $2016 to $2400; (4) raise Public Service Director Dopp's salary to $3900 and Tax Collector Archie Roberts' salary to $3600; (5) reduce Personnel Director Jack Murray's salary from $200 per month to $150 per month; (6) authorize construction of a shed behind the City Hall for $1500.

Carbonell said he was against all of these moves. Harden is definitely against the reduction in Murray's salary and is believed to side with Carbonell on most of the other issues. Consequently, a 3-2 vote on most of the controversial items is forecast, with Mayor W. W. Demeritt and Commissioners John Carbonell and Albert Cooper voting in favor.
