Pleasant Prairie Farmer is Fined on Assault Charge This Morning.
John Fonken, a Pleasant Prairie farmer, was to have been tried by a jury in the municipal court this morning on a charge of making an assault on Gios Zeppe, an Italian hunter, but when the case was called it was announced that the defendant had been taken ill during the night and could not leave his bed to appear in court. His attorney asked that his plea be changed and on a plea of guilty he was fined a dollar and the costs of the action. With the ending of the suit for assault a combination warrant was issued for the arrest of the Italian charging him with hunting on lands without the permission of the owner and hunting on pasture lands. Both charges are listed in the state laws. Zeppe was arraigned in court and the hearing of the charges against him continued for a week in order to make it possible for Fonken to appear in court. Fonken declared that the only assault that he committed was to order the Italian off his land and he promises to push the action against the hunter.
