WASHINGTON.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14.

Our readers will recollect, perhaps, an article which appeared in the Intelligencer, on the 10th of July, under the head of "A Tour to the Niagara," comprising the observations made by a gentleman, in a journey to the north-western frontier. Relying upon the known integrity of our correspondent, we published his journal without scrutinizing into the accuracy of his statements, founded, we have no doubt, upon what he deemed correct information--not suspecting that in so doing we should inflict the slightest wound upon the feelings of any individual whatever, and much less one for whom we entertain a very high respect. Such, however, has been our misfortune.

In the course of the remarks of our Tourist, speaking of the Middle Sister island in Lake Erie, he states, this island "received Harrison's army previous to its landing on the Canada shore; it staid there three days, and gave the enemy an opportunity of evacuating Amherstburg & Malden."

This passage has been complained of in very bitter terms, as highly defamatory and injurious to the military character of Maj. Gen. Harrison--and the most respectable evidence has been laid before us, that in the instance quoted our correspondent was incorrectly advised. We have received from two distinguished eye-witnesses, the following statement touching the matter, which, though intended for our perusal alone, we think it proper, in justice, to publish:

"The Middle Sister was the first point at which the troops were concentrated, and the arrangements preparatory to a general embarkation made. From Put-in Bay to the place of debarkation upon the Canadian shore is thirty miles. No prudent man would attempt to cross this expanse of lake with eighty open boats filled with men the last of Sept. without some intermediate point of concentration. The Middle Sister was selected for that purpose, and the day which was spent there in making the arrangements, evinced the wisdom of the measures, for the wind was violent and the lake rough, and to such a degree as to have rendered it impracticable to proceed upon the expedition. Malden was evacuated, and the buildings burnt some days before our arrival at the Middle Sister."
