DEPUTY MARSHAL ARRESTED.

Accused of Maltreating a Woman—He Was Sent to the Island.

Michael Carberry, 30 years old, a deputy in the employ of City Marshal David Ullman, was locked up in the East 104th street station last night on a charge of attempting to assault Mrs. Nellie Butterworth of 169 East 102d street.

Mrs. Butterworth's husband is ill in the Presbyterian Hospital, and she has been so poor lately that she could not pay her rent.

She said that Carberry came to her rooms on Saturday with a dispossess warrant. He told her he would call again, and in the meantime he would try to arrange it so that she would not be put out of her rooms.

He came back last night and Mrs. Butterworth says he made an improper proposal to her. When she repelled him she says he seized her by the throat.

Her screams aroused the whole house. Frank Morehead, a tenant, rushed into the rooms and dragged Carberry from the struggling woman. Carberry retaliated by kicking Morehead in the face and blacking his two eyes.

A policeman was called in, and the deputy marshal was locked up in the East 104th street station.

The police of that precinct say that Carberry is an ex-convict, and that his picture is No. 2,080 in the Rogues' Gallery. They assert that he served two terms in Sing Sing for highway robbery.
