"The Archbishop of this City, and some other Prelates, continue to treat with the King's Ministers about adjusting the Affairs with the Clergy, but the Public do not yet exactly know what Progress they have made in this Negotiation. In the mean while, we daily see some new Pamphlet published against the Claims of the Clergy. It is true indeed that those Pieces are not openly countenanced by the Government, nor do the Clergy make any Reply to them. There is one among the rest, just come from the Press, intituled An Impartial Inquiry into Ecclesiastical Immunities, which is the best that has yet appeared on the Subject; the Author whilst he preserves all the Respect and Regard due to Religion and its Ministers, confutes their Pretensions so solidly, that he leaves them no Room for a Reply. This Work has a great Run, and will in all Probability terminate the Dispute, if it be not already as good as ended, as most of the Clergy, especially those of the second Order, are actually disposed to give the King Proofs of their Fidelity, and Obedience."
