THE GIFT OF SONG.

ADDRESSED TO VIOLA.

Alone, at evening's twilight hour,
A lovely maiden kneels in pray'r;
No thought of ill, no shade of sin.
To bar Heav'n's pearly gates comes there.

Earth's thousand clam'rous tongues are mute;
No sound the holy silence mars;
For white-rob'd Innocence and Truth
Commune beneath th' eternal stars.

Lo, as she prays, the cloudless Moon
Shines natural in a richer glow;
Light flashes o'er the gorg'ous scene
Like glory on an Angel's brow.

The realms of poesy and fame,
Ope wide their portals to her gaze;
And there, upon a glorious throne,
Sits Genius, crown'd with deathless bays.

'Tis done: The suppliant's pray'r is heard-
Heart, brain, and soul, all feel the throb-
The Gift of Song, like tongues of fire.
Descends upon her from her God.
