Later Sales Prove Opening Day Winner On Tobacco Market Has Good Crop

W. C. Elliott, Curdsville dark-fired tobacco grower, whose opening day sale of 1,036 pounds averaging $54.52 won the Chamber of Commerce prize on the Farmville Market for the second straight year, will be back many times this season with tobacco.

He produced about 8,000 pounds this year, using seed produced from a cross of Lizard Tail and Turtle Foot varieties.

That opening day sale, which sold from $52 to $60, wasn't unusual, either, as some folks think.

A few days later Mr. Elliott was back with another 1,000 pounds which sold from $45 to $57.

Accepting the Chamber check last week, Mr. Elliott told W. A. Watson, Jr. that growers appreciated the Chamber backing of the tobacco market here.

Despite the drought, Mr. Elliott, widely known as a top tobacco grower for many years, has lots of tobacco yet to be marketed.

He figures much of it falls into peg groups from $45 to $50, based on his own estimates.

Now if Mr. Elliott comes up with one of those Chamber prizes on Jubilee day, he could count 1953 as a fine crop year.
