Full Text
Agriculture is a pursuit of primeval dignity, for Adam previous to his fall was commanded by the Deity to cultivate the earth. Our own country possesses treasures and resources of which we have hitherto remained in a state of culpable ignorance. The science of agriculture becomes hourly more popular, and we sincerely hope that those who are qualified to illustrate this subject, will make this journal the medium of their lucubrations. Our sister states have afforded an example worthy of imitation. The science of agriculture has clothed lands heretofore deemed barren, cold and dismal heaths, with all the bloom and luxuriance of more hospitable climates: it has vanquished nature and planted flowers upon barren rocks and cheerless deserts.
"The swain in barren deserts with surprise Sees lilies spring and sudden verdure rise; And starts amidst the thirsty wilds to hear New falls of water murmuring in his ear."
These are the true riches of the earth, in comparison with which all the diamonds in the mines of Golconda sink into nothing.
Fed. Republican.
