The value of operations to a man per day is said to range from 50 cents to $2.25, and most of the miners are now living on hope for better success in the future. The prices of provisions is enormously high. For instance, pork, beef, and horse meat are selling at $2 per pound. Many unfortunates are subsisting upon boiled nettles and snails. Extreme suffering is feared to be inevitable.
