"Seventy Years Young" is the title of the leading editorial in The Friend for December, and to its septuagenarian contemporary and admired companion in the field of journalism the Star-Bulletin extends sincerest congratulations.
Few indeed are the American newspapers that can boast of an uninterrupted existence for seven decades; fewer the weeklies and periodicals of any description. None can point to a record fuller of high ideals materializing as achievements. In 1843 the child was born to a life of vigorous battling for justice and progress; in 1913 the veteran wields the sword with the fire of youth and the cool judgment and effect of maturity. The first copy was issued in January, 1843, under the title of "Temperance Advocate" and touched the match to the powder in a fight for reform. The subsequent issues have breathed a like spirit of militant Christianity.
The survival of The Friend through many troublous periods is proof of a purpose not shaken by changes in the tide of affairs. That, even more than its attainment of three score years and ten is cause for congratulation to this news paper and its editors and associates of the staff.
