Full Text

Conciliating the South. The Democrats have begun to give Gen. Grant advice. They have a few suggestions to make about his cabinet. Such or such men would be pleasing to the South. They desire the General to place his resignation promptly in the hands of President Johnson. Nothing, they say, would so conciliate the South.

This plan of conciliating the South has been the staple Democratic doctrine for many years. Since its beginning, we have had the disturbances in Kansas, the great Rebellion, and riots and murders without number, all in the interest of these people who are so hard to conciliate. We presume Gen. Grant will appoint a Cabinet to suit himself, and leave Southern people to like it or not.
