Extract of a letter from a General Officer, belonging to this State, dated Valley-Forge, June 7, 1778.
"Mr. Loring, Commissary of prisoners, officially informed us the day before, yesterday, that the army were about to leave Philadelphia; that General Clinton did not wish to carry off the prisoners of war but would send them out to us, or leave them in the city, provided we would promise to let them have as many in exchange at some other time. The Commissioners are arrived in Philadelphia.--Governor Johnstone, Earl of Carlisle, and Mr. Eden, a brother to the late Governor Eden. Lord Howe and General Clinton are the two others. Lord Cornwallis is returned. Whether their arrival will delay the army's leaving Philadelphia or not, a few days will discover. Great numbers of recruits have come in from Maryland and the Jerseys; their regiments will out-number ours; those from Maryland are enlisted during the war."
