It is also asserted, that an American officer from Fort Stoddart, passed a few days since through this city on his way to Washington: for the purpose of submitting to our Cabinet some severe accusations against Gen.W.; among the rest, that G. W. has attempted to win him over to schemes which were hostile to his country.
In a controversy which has occurred in the Kentucky papers, between Judge Coburn and A. R. Marshall, Esq. the latter has produced a certificate from a Dr. Duke, detailing a conversation with Judge C. respecting the Kentucky Spanish Association. Judge C. is represented to have said, that when at Natchez in 1790 or 1791, "he was informed by a gentleman of respectability, that general Wilkinson held a commission as colonel in the Spanish service and received the pay as such. The Judge stated further, that on his return to Kentucky, he mentioned this information to Wilkinson, and that W. did not deny it?"
It is impossible for Us to form or to express any positive opinion on these accusations under existing circumstances, and it is the duty of every impartial man to suspend his judgment until more satisfactory evidence is adduced.
