U. S. DISTRICT COURT MONDAY, NOV. 16, 1874
(Before Judge Shepley and Kelley,)
The November term of said Court commenced its session this morning. The usual proclamations were made. Prayer was offered by Rev. Mr. Stone. The Grand Jury were empanelled and sworn, Edwin J. Nightingale appointed foreman, and they retire to their room for the consideration of such business as may be brought before them by the United States District Attorney.
Petition of George W. Chapin for a writ of habeas corpus, to issue to the keeper of the Providence county jail, to show cause why he should be further detained in his custody, (he having taken the oath for the relief of poor debtors, and made the necessary assignment as required by law,) filed, and writ ordered to issue returnable forthwith. Writ issued, and the said Chapin was brought into court, and no cause being shown for his further detention, the said George W. Chapin was ordered to be discharged from further custody.
The cause in equity James S. Goode vs. Olive N. Angell, called for hearing. Heard in part. William W. Sayles, Benjamin F. Thurston, S. A. Bowman for complainant; Charles S. Bradley for defendant.
The grand jury came into court, and having presented sundry indictments, they were discharged from further attendance.
The court adjourned to 10 o'clock A. M., to-morrow (Tuesday.)
