Morehouse In For Congratulations

A few days ago it appeared to Morehouse men and their friends that the time was ripe for a sure test of the real Morehouse spirit. In this cause a worthy idea crept upon the scene to afford this timely occasion. Riding in on the theme "Gym-Swim" it was soon to swim into the hearts and minds of the entire college center and those who felt the need for such recreational facility that would extend its benefits to the whole college center. In that, the effort inquired into the generosity and public spirit of all friends to education and its sports auxiliary.

The first effort realized the surprising figure of $20,000 in cash. Pledges are still forthcoming to the extent that in a short while the whole of the amount sought will be realized.

From this gesture a Physical Education plant, gymnasium, swimming pool and other wholesome facilities in the field of sports and recreation are in the making at an outlay of over $500,000.

It is encouraging in that colleges fully realize the assets in a live sports program. In addition to advertising the schools, sports have come upon the scene as a fine relation mediator. Only recently, sports have made a laudable contribution in the settlement of some of our grave problems. Still at work, it is felt that if sufficient support is given in this fine field, sports will come in as one of our prime contenders in this struggle to let Democracy work.

The founder's day addresses of both banker J. H. Wheeler and the Rev. Roland Smith at this epochal occasion rendered justice to the importance of our private institutions. These must be supported if our Democratic principles in education are to be balanced. Surely the private school idea of self-help was never given a greater emphasis.

Let's give Morehouse college and their thousands of friends a big hand. Under the able leadership of President Benjamin E. Mays the school holds its own among the first-rate colleges of the nation.
