HIGHWAY PROBLEM

IN NORTH SECTION

Now that the new concrete roadway from the Portland line to Glastonbury center is coming along, with prospect of completion before many moons, the condition of the highway from Station 35 to East Hartford is giving state highway officials some concern. At present this roadway is quite narrow and there are a good many curves that need to be straightened. Commissioner John A. Macdonald has had a group of surveyors at work recently measuring the standard width of the Glastonbury-East Hartford highway and upon their figures he bases the opinion that widening and straightening that highway will prove very costly. It is expected that when the new highway south of Station 35 is completed there will be a noticeable increase in the traffic over it and that will make the shortcomings of the northerly stretch of road more noticeable.

Even with the removal of the trolley tracks from Glastonbury to East Hartford, Mr. Macdonald can see no promise of relief from the possible congestion. He estimates that the damages to abutting property owners by widening or straightening the highway would be incommensurate with the improvements effected.
