THE BULLETIN.

STATE TEACHERS' INSTITUTE.

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION.

Superintendent's Office,

SPRINGFIELD, ILL., MAY, 28, 1872.

The annual session of the state teacher's institute will be held, at the state normal university, in August next, continuing three weeks. By particular request, the president and faculty have kindly consented to devote the session mainly to special instruction in the natural sciences, to accommodate teachers desiring to prepare themselves for examination in the additional branches of study required by the new school law. The services of the very best instructors and lecturers in natural science will be secured, so far as may be necessary, in addition to the personal instructions of the president and faculty.

No pains will be spared to make the session just what is needed in the present emergency. As much instruction will be given in the designated branches of natural science, as the teachers present can possibly receive in the allotted time.

I earnestly advise every teacher who can, and who is determined to qualify himself for these new requirements of the school law, to attend the Institute resolved to make the utmost of its opportunities. A thousand teachers can be accommodated and that number or more, should be there. No other equal opportunity will be afforded prior to the fall examinations under the new law. If teachers will immediately procure and diligently study some good text-book in each of the enumerated sciences, and faithfully persevere therein till the meeting of the Institute, and then go up to the Normal University and take the three weeks course of drill and lectures, there can be little doubt that a large majority of those so doing, will be able to pass the required examination. The Institute occurs during the general vacations of the schools throughout the State, and the time will therefore be most favorable for the attendance of the largest number of teachers.

But teachers are admonished not to rely too much on the Institute, nor on any account to defer the commencement of their studies in the natural sciences. The Institute will be supplementary to the means of preparation recommended in circular No. 12 (current series.) not a substitute therefor. All available helps will be needed. There is a great deal of work to be done, and not an hour to spare. It will depend at last upon the spirit and pluck, upon the determined personal exertions of each teacher, whether he will succeed or not. Let teachers do all they possibly can for themselves and for each other, and then avail themselves of all the facilities within their reach, and especially let every one who can, make his arrangement to attend the State Institute, resolved to be present at the opening, and to remain till the last hour of the last day.

For detailed information concerning the Institute, address President Richard Edwards. Normal Illinois.
