Full Text

Elizur Wright is again on the gridiron of the fugitive statute. We forget whether this is the second or the third time which our quondam editorial copartner's purse has been filched, and his personal liberty imperiled, by the statutory bloodhounds of our great National Whig and Democratic piracy. This persistent persecution of Wright, as our readers are aware, is founded on a suspicion, that our old friend performed an act of humanity in behalf of Shadrach, precisely like that which was performed in behalf of the kidnapped Apostles when "the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors and brought them forth" We are only too sorry to say, that there is no proof, in the case now pending, of Elizur's having actually imitated the illustrious example of that "law-breaking" angel; although we have no doubt there is heart enough in Wright to have prompted him to follow in the foot-steps of that emancipating messenger of the Lord, if the way had been fairly open for him to do so. We shall see if that Pro-slavery District Court of Massachusetts, aided by its unscrupulous flunky attorney, have this time succeeded in getting a jury that will consign a man to the penitentiary on a charge of walking in an angel's footsteps, even if the charge shall have been proved.—True Dem.

Elizur Wright is prosecuted multiple times under fugitive slave laws for allegedly aiding Shadrach's escape, compared to a biblical angel's act; no proof exists, but the pro-slavery court may convict him anyway.
