Full Text

The Perils of a Slaveholding Community.
The Cincinnati Commercial has a pro-slavery correspondent, who, writing from Houston, Texas, July 30, expressing a confident belief that the alleged slave insurrection was actually planned by white men, says:
"Whatever opinions we may have imbibed as to abstract rights, I do not see how the people of Texas can do otherwise than exercise a strict supervision over the actions and opinions of Northern men within her borders. It may seem strange to a citizen of Ohio that he can not be allowed the same freedom in the expression of his sentiment in Texas that a citizen of Texas would take in Ohio; but let any such person pass a few weeks in the vicinity of a slave insurrection, and he will readily comprehend why it is so, and why it should be so. The citizens of a slave community live in a vast powder magazine, which is liable at any moment to be ignited, maliciously or accidentally, and blow them to the devil. In view of the prospect of a midnight sky glowing with the red light of burning dwellings, the breeze burdened by shrieks of men murdered in their beds, their wives and daughters violated, and all the concomitant horrors of a servile Insurrection, it behooves them to exercise that eternal vigilance which with them, is the price not only of liberty, but existence itself."
And yet we are asked to sit calmly by whilst this withering curse of slavery is spread over all our free territory, and more victims are provided for the terrible explosion thus declared to be so imminent.
The editor of a western paper exultingly exclaims that he has "found " day." Perhaps he had better advertise the fact more extensively, with a view to finding the owner. We doubt not there are plenty of people who have lost such an article.
