FRIENDSHIP.
Source of ev'ry blessing,
Lamp of life, thy splendour shed;
Raptures, sweet beyond expressing,
Hover round thy sacred head.
When I see the morning blushes,
Rapture trickles through my veins;
How the crimson glory rushes
O'er the wide ethereal plains.
Sweeter still is friendship's passion;
O descend and dwell with me:
Each fond thought and inclination
Shall repose itself in thee.
Sweet to the melancholy rover
Is the stream and circling mill,
Seen afar o'er fields of clover--
Friendship, thou art sweeter still.
Badge of friendship, could I bear thee
In the centre of my heart.
There with pleasure would I wear thee,
Never but with life to part.
When domestic griefs assail you,
And misfortune frowns severe,
Know, if ought it can avail you,
Friendship drops the silent tear.
Then may guardian angels near you
Their sky-tinctur'd wings display,
And with heaven's bright prospect cheer you,
Point the path, and lead the way.
