Full Text

All history proves that the catholic church is the real starting point of our modern civilization; that without her the nations of Europe itself would probably be yet as barbarous as the tribes of Africa, Australia, and the savages of America: that moreover the church contains in her bosom the very centre and climax of real civilization, and that she is the only guarantee of its beneficent influence on human society. It is not to new inventions she is opposed, which may, if rightly used, also promote the work of God among men, and glorify Him, who is the author of nature and of the human intellect. - It is only to the direction of modern civilization, which is deviating from our last destiny, to mere materialism, to which she is opposed, and must be opposed.
