JANUARY 11.

The legislature of Virginia passed a law some time last month for investing certain persons with powers to set on foot a lottery, for raising the sum of 4000l. at 10 per cent. deduction. The objects of this lottery are to promote and disseminate a minute knowledge of the southern parts of the United States of America, from Philadelphia to the Gulf of Mexico, and from the Atlantic to the Mississippi. The plates, &c. necessary to the elucidation of this useful work are in the hands of Colonel Tatham; and the work is carried on in the capitol under the patronage of the state government, where it is frequently inspected by its officers, to prevent any errors or misinformations to the public.
