FRESH VEGETABLES ARE COMING FROM SONOYTA

The Sonoyta truck gardener, Guadalupe Burruel, was in the city with a truck load of fresh vegetables from his garden on the Sonoyta river Sonora Mex., just over the border about 40 miles south.

He makes the trip once a week at present and finds ready sale for all his output, because he knows gardening and offers only first-class vegetables of fine flavor, which he delivers as fresh as when picked.

The load brought in Tuesday consisted of green onions, spinach, mustard greens, carrots, turnips, and beets. In season, he will have a plentiful supply of watermelons—he goes well on watermelons in case there are no floods. For the Sonoyta river sometimes goes on a rampage.

Burruel's profits are not very large, owing to the necessity of paying duty. But he can meet the prices brought here by the California or Arizona article and still make a small profit. The housewives are eager to get his vegetables, of course, because there is no comparison when it comes to freshness of condition. It is as if they were picked just before dinner from one's own garden.

So this is quite an industry, though small, opening one's eyes to the possibilities below the border, where there is an abundance of water. It is hoped that the industry will grow until some day it will constitute a compensation for living in Ajo.
