One of the evil effects of the policy President Harrison has instituted of rewarding every editor who was wildly in favor of protectionism with an office is the lowered tone of the papers. The New York Tribune is the most notable instance of a muzzled paper. Its editorial columns are dull and pointless. The subjects which are treated are either intensely local or superatively diplomatic. The old, time strength and freedom of Reid have been suppressed and there remains only the bland, administration-admiring, careful not-to-say anything policy to relieve the columns of absolute inanity. In other papers the difference is more or less marked and they all show evidences of being deprived of some of the independence which is necessary to the force and integrity of the editorial efforts a good paper. We are glad to note that our esteemed contemporary the Morning News would not accept an office, not even a consulate, if it were tendered on a silver salver. Oh! no, perish the thought! The Daily Republican never had a thought of leaving Wilmington for any purpose whatever. It is darkly intimated that neither one of them has a ghost of chance of office while Mr. Higgins doles them out for Delaware. It is pleasant to know that they can sail into the administration in true Sullivanesque style with the hope of knocking out the appointments which are not commendable in themselves and which have not met the approbation of the respectable element of the Republican party. They are at perfect liberty to protest against Higginsism because they are not likely to be muzzled with offices.
