The Physical Accomplishments On WPA Projects

WPA operations have substantially expended and improved the public facilities of the State of Virginia. The extent of these accomplishments is indicated in the accompanying tabulation of work done under the major phases of the program.

Through June 30, 1938, WPA had constructed 199 public buildings and additions to buildings and modernized or otherwise improved 935 others. The work included the construction of 53 educational buildings and 26 recreational bldgs. and modernization and improvements to 643 educational buildings and 39 recreational buildings.

Highway work continued as a substantial part of WPA activities in the State with a total of 4,300 miles of roads and streets constructed, reconditioned or otherwise improved, 3,400 culverts repaired or built and 117 bridges erected, replaced or reconditioned.

In the field of water supply and sanitation considerable benefit has been received from the 125 miles of new water pipe and 123 miles of new sewers, together with 3200 and 200 new service connections, respectively. In the rural areas over 89,000 sanitary toilets have been installed.

Outstanding among accomplishments on non-construction projects were the distribution of 19,000,000 pounds of foodstuffs to needy families. the renovation of 650,000 public school and library books, the serving of 8,500,000 lunches to undernourished school children, and the production of 2,500,000 garments and other articles for distribution to needy families.

The report covers only the accomplishments of projects operated by the WPA and does not include projects operated by other Federal agencies under Works Program funds, or any of the work done by sponsors with their own resources.
