Hundreds Buried in the Ruins and Others Precipitated into the River—Eight Persons Known to be Killed and Over Fifty Seriously Injured—The Work of Rescuing the Victims—Casualties.
Shocking Disaster at a County Fair.
Detroit, Mich., Oct. 2.—An Adrian (Michigan) special to the Detroit Post and Tribune gives particulars of an accident that occurred at the County fair grounds in that city this afternoon. About 2,000 people had assembled on the newly erected grand stand to witness the races. The centre of the stand gave way with a crash, the front part fell outward and the back fell into the river, precipitating the mass of people among the ruins. Work was at once commenced to extricate the dead and wounded, and the opera-house was opened and many of the dead and wounded, as fast as extricated, were conveyed there. The following is a list of the casualties as far as can be ascertained:
Many of the injured were taken away by their friends, so that the actual number injured cannot be given. Killed—M. M. Merck, Adrian; Mrs. John Hubbard, Jasper, Mich.; two boys about twelve years of age, named Hyle and Mosher; David Plumadore, Petersburg, Mich., aged eighteen; William Muizer, Adrian. Wounded—J. Winn, badly bruised about the head and shoulders; Mrs. Vedder, leg broken; Justice Wright, Fairfield, Mich., badly bruised; J. B. Goken, leg broken; Jerome Campback, badly injured; Walter Merritt, internal injuries and badly bruised about the head; Louis Adams, leg broken; Will Cramer, head cut badly; Miss Callahan, leg broken; James Hyde, foot smashed and bruised about the chest; John Hurlbut, leg crushed; Mr. Hunt, Fairfield, Mich., head badly bruised; B. F. Reynolds, badly hurt, extent of injuries not known; Mrs. Robert Carpenter, arm broken; Ed. Hume, hip crushed; Henry Hart, Adrian, shoulder broken, head crushed, also thought he has sustained serious internal injuries; Miss Stuart, severe internal injuries, and is unconscious; a man about thirty-five, name unknown, terribly bruised, and also injured internally; Francis Gilbert, severely injured about the head; B. Morey, head and body badly bruised; Robert McWilliam, Ridgway, leg broken, head bruised and internal injuries; Jesse Warren, Adrian, leg broken, daughter also badly injured; Mrs. William Gilbert and son, seriously injured; Frank Chamberlain, leg badly bruised; A. Crassler, badly hurt in the back and internally; Mrs. Hiram Burt and daughter, badly bruised; S. Braner was under the stand, and was injured in the shoulder and across the chest; S. Cole, arm broken and leg bruised; Mrs. Mary Perkins was badly hurt across the chest; two painters engaged in lettering the back of the stand were buried in the debris and badly injured; Lillie Orendorf, badly injured in the back and shoulder; Mrs. J. H. Gates, limb dislocated; Maggie Cicotte, bruised in the back and shoulder; George Hirsh, severe internal injuries and conscious; a Chinese washerwoman severely injured, will probably die; Mrs. Hayt, severely injured in the back and internally; W. R. Tayer, head badly cut; William Comfort, arm broken; W. S. Stow, arms and legs bruised; William Kehsie, son and two daughters, severely injured; J. Westerman, shoulder broken; Miss Rodfield, leg broken. Everything possible is being done for the relief of the wounded.
