June 21st., 1880.
I have been a resident of this district for about thirty-four years, and in that time I have never written to any paper, and really have never had any particular occasion; but there are periods in the history of every man's life when it becomes necessary that he take the pen in hand to defend himself or friends; that period in my history has arrived, which accounts for this article.
I learn from a very reliable source that one Mr. Puff, of this District, is reporting to your town that there are no Republicans in this District that will support Mr. Tennant for Sheriff during the coming election. Now I claim to be a Republican, and one that has always stuck to the text and I can count to-day 25 Republicans in this District who will support Mr. Tennant, and have no doubt in my mind but there are as many.
Mr. Puff takes great pains whenever an opportunity is afforded, to light down on a Democrat and tell him that Emrod is a black Republican, and whirl right around on his heel and tell a Republican that Emrod is a Democrat, rebel, &c. What foolishness.
Said Puff is a strong advocate of the Primary, but if he does not get his choice in the Primary, why, he then bolts, and claims it is all right. Now that is my reason for not voting in the Primary any more. I have always thought that- if I did not get my choice that I would support the nominee-the choice of the people, but the Primary has proved a failure, and has been the result of ruling out our very best men for office. Mr. Editor, I am a tax payer, and appreciate Mr. Tennant's efforts, and not only his efforts, but his success in causing the reduction of our tax in the last 8 or 10 years in regard to the keeping of the poor, What did it cost 10 years ago? Very near ten thousand dollars. And what does it cost to-day? A little upwards of four thousand dollars. This gives us a reduction of nearly six thousand dollars, and Emrod was one of the head engineers in this reduction. Do we appreciate these acts, or do we condemn them, because it hurts the pocket book of the Morgantown clique. Do we intend all the time to give our offices to men in this end of the county, and on the East side at that, or do we propose to divide the offices and give the upper end of the county an office at least once in ten years.
We ask these questions because they are of interest to us. We have not forgot that one-horse County Convention, held at Morgantown last March, where my neighbors and myself were so strongly solicited to attend, and did attend, only to come back home disgusted. Yes, indeed, that vote of 17 yeas was too overwhelming to even ask for the nays, and so we poor uneducated men from the country had to stand back and look on in amazement to see the vest pocket resolutions put before house and passed, one after another, without opposition; and to hear the Hero of our county blackguarded, because he, during his administration, could not promote every man in the State who made applications to him; but there was one little gent from the country who had the courage and pluck to let the Convention know that their proceedings was not endorsed by all.
Mr. Editor, I never had a county office, never asked for one, but if I ever do, I will first consult the ring, and if I can get their support and am not found out and exposed, I am sure of success.
Where is the next candidate for Prosecuting Attorney to come from, now that Blaine did not receive the nomination? Well, we are in for red headed men, for we believe that they will be determined in their efforts.
Yours,
A Republican.
