A green watermelon sat on a fruit stand,

Annis Ragle drives a natty road wagon to his ranch a few miles from town.
Sidney Lacey, of Tucson, was a passenger on Monday's west-bound express.

Ex-Governor A. P. K. Safford and wife were passengers on Thursday's west-bound train,
Mrs. Charles H. Brinley, with her youngest son and daughter, are in Tucson visiting friends.
Judge H. N. Alexander and wife were passengers on Monday's express, bound for Oregon.
Deputy Sheriff Cottreall went up to Castle Dome Thursday to serve papers in an attachment suit.
The merchants are handling considerable gold dust of late; the most of it is brought in by the Papagos.
Robert Gant was here during the week making final proof on his homestead in the lovely Mohawk valley.
Major Ed. Railton passed here several days ago on his way to Sonora, where he has valuable mining interests.
Japanese silks, Persian lawns and poplins in stock at John Gandolfo's store.
Gleason Nugent, one of the most industrious and popular locomotive firemen on the road, was in town on Tuesday.
General M. H. Sherman and George Cristy, of the Phoenix Bank, passed through town Californiaward on Wednesday.
Crosse and Blackwell's pickles; boneless chicken; Spanish olives and "such like" good eatables on sale at John Gandolfo's mammoth store.
The board of school trustees of this district has appointed Mrs. C. E. Rembert principal, and Miss Ella Burton assistant teacher of the Yuma public school.
Captain F. W. Smith was here on Tuesday and returned to Mohawk the following day. The captain is a good writer and promised to send us a new snake story.
W. E. Gerber and R. S. Ritchie, of Sacramento, returned from their visit to the Mohawk valley on Monday; they were very pleased with the land and have made number of investments there.

The "tip" craze has struck Tucson. The young lady counts the number of times gentlemen tip their hats to her, and the one who makes up the fiftieth tip is supposed to be the one whom the lady is to marry. The young gentlemen of the A. and H. pueblo have a lively time tipping their hats now.

The Board of County School Examiners will meet on Monday, September 3d, at ten o'clock a. m.
Work on the Red Cloud mine is producing satisfactory results. Plenty of high grade ore in sight.
George Bennett, the well known restauranteur, has been quite ill, but is now rapidly convalescing.
Train "19" was delayed several hours yesterday on the California desert by a ditched freight train.
The switch engine has been sent to Tucson for repairs. Old "122" is now being used for switching in the yard.
J. L. Redondo, the popular clerk of the Board of Supervisors of Yuma county, is on a business visit in Tucson.
Al. Lilienthal and D. Jadah, two popular and affable commercial travelers, visited Yuma merchants this week.
Messrs. Gandolfo, Purdy, Ewing Blaisdell and Townsend, went to Tucson on Wednesday to appear in a land contest case.
A number of the inmates of the Territorial Prison, in their leisure moments, make very fine lace which commands ready sale.
Jacob Luther, reported to be from Yuma, was thrown from a freight train, while attempting to steal a ride in Nebraska, and killed.
Captain Sam Hill, the temperance lecturer, entertained a few persons on Tuesday evening at the court house. His discourse was dull and chestnutty.
Gus Lee, a former resident here, was in town on Monday and aided Charley Jackson in his musical treat. Gus is a first-class banjoist and is a well trained musician.
Camille Rouillier, the genial clerk of the S. P. hotel, left for San Francisco on Monday. Mr. Rouillier's trip is a matrimonial one, and he will return with his bride in a couple of weeks.
Miss Carlota Brinley and her cousin, Miss Mary Peralta arrived from Fairbanks yesterday. Miss Brinley is a leading young lady and belongs to one of the best families of Yuma.—Star.
Colonel Harper's locomotive chime whistle is a source of great delight to the average small boy, and the "double toot" can be heard from aforesaid small boy at all hours of the day or night.
The Brown House, of Phoenix, one of the finest frame buildings in the southwest, caught fire on the 9th and was totally destroyed owing to a scarcity of water. Loss, $35,000. Insurance, $13,000.
The Indian farms along the slough and Gila bottom are looking fine; they will harvest immense crops, but not sufficient to overcome the loss occasioned by the non-overflow of the Colorado river.
George W. Norton, the original locator of the Mohawk canal, left a couple of watermelons at this office the other day. The melons weighed 75 lbs. and were delicious. They were grown on Mr. Norton's ranch in Mohawk valley.
Mr. and Mrs. Hartlee received a number of elegant and valuable wedding presents. Messrs. J. L. Powell, R. H. Reynolds, H. H. Powell and Chas. Lewy, presented the newly married couple with a magnificent imported china dinner set, handsomely decorated.
