Full Text
The petition to make Memorial Day a legal holiday should certainly receive favorable consideration by the Legislature. The majority of the shops in this city are closed on that day, and our banks are unable to transact any business with the banks of Pennsylvania or New York, on account of the day being a legal holiday in those states. But aside from all these considerations, the passage of this bill would be a graceful tribute to men who dared death in defense of their country. There are more graves every year to be decorated, and fewer hands to decorate them, and we hope the day is not far distant when the members of the various societies and orders in this city will turn out on that day and assist the veterans in paying this tribute of respect to their deceased comrades. The strewing of flowers annually on the graves of the old soldiers is a beautiful custom, and we sincerely trust that when the last veteran shall have answered the final roll call willing hands will be found to continue this labor of love.
