Record in Club Work
NET PROFIT FROM ONE SOW
AMOUNTS TO MORE THAN
$1,000 IN THREE YEARS.
The fact that Milton Eason, a
club boy of Hempstead county, has
made more than $1,000 in three
years from one sow is not due to
any streak of luck or exceptional
ability but to good management of
purebred stock. Milton's record is
a good example of what can be done
with purebred hogs in Arkansas
when they are treated properly.
Milton began showing that he
has the stuff from which hog
breeders are made early in 1920.
when he enrolled as a member of
a pig club. With the assistance of
his county agent he borrowed $70
from his local bank and bought a
purebred Poland China gilt. Her
name was Mammoth Wonder and
she has lived up to her title.
In the spring of 1920 the gilt
farrowed a litter of six and all
proved to be prize winners. The
sow and litter carried off all hon-
ors over seven other counties at the
fair in Texarkana in October. 1920.
Five of the litter were sold for
$250 and the sixth was traded for
a cow and calf
Mammoth Wonder has farrowed
six times in the past three years and
has averaged 11 pigs to the litter.
Milton has sold $700 worth of pigs
for breeding purposes and $550
worth of pork. He has won $135 in
cash prizes, making his total in-
come from the one sow $1,385. The
total expenses connected with the
herd, including feed and labor, has
been $295, leaving a net profit of
$1,090.
