By the last letters from Gaudaloupe, we have advice that Col. Crump, Governor of the said Island, having sent a flag of truce to Martinico, to treat with the Governor of that island about an exchange of prisoners; Mr. M'Kay, an Officer at Gaudaloupe, who was Sent on this errand, instead of meeting with the treatment usual among all civilized nations on such occasions, was immediately asked by the French Governor, Whether he was prepared to die? To which impertinent and inhuman question the brave Caledonian replied, That he could undauntedly meet death in any shape; but apprehended he was not then in any danger, as he came upon a fair and necessary errand. No, replied the polite Frenchman; you come as a spy, and as such I shall order you to be hanged within two hours. This was accordingly done, and the vessel suffered to return to Gaudaloupe: As soon as Governor Crump heard of this barbarity, he set himself to find a method of retaliation, in order to assert the honour and dignity of the British crown; and having discovered in Gaudaloupe two planters, who were near relations to the Governor of Martinico, after a short apology to them for the necessity he was under to make reprisals, he ordered them both to be hanged, as an atonement for the life of the Scotch officer.
