Full Text

The nation's safety is not a matter of battleships or standing army. These under mighty commanders defend from outward foes. The foes we most dread are those who from within sap our national strength, by attacking the integrity of our youths.

We need the giants of commerce, finance and organization, but these are not what the nation most needs. She must have men. Not merely men in attire, but real men. Men who live close to nature and vitalize their blood through fresh air and wholesome exercise.

Here and there some freak seems to defy all the rules of good living and succeeds. He is a dangerous example. Nature makes few who can disregard her laws and prosper.

The nation's safety lies not in these, but in the mass of men who try to follow her laws. In this the country boy has the advantage. He lives much out of doors, imbibes the fresh air, drinks in the odors of growing things, and profits by their inspiration.
