What is this article about?
In Louisiana, a legislative committee confirmed 400-500 murders of Union men in recent months, with no official action, contradicting the governor's earlier claim of nearly 200 and the legislature's denial. The report highlights unchecked violence against Union supporters in the South under President Johnson's administration.

Some little time ago, the Governor of this State notified the legislature that nearly two hundred murders of Union men had been committed in their jurisdiction, and also, that there had been no official notice taken of these atrocious acts. The legislature were highly indignant at these assertions, and denied them point blank. They did more. They appointed a committee to investigate the facts, and report a triumphant disclaimer of the Governor's facts. This commission has recently reported, to the great disgust of the body who appointed them. This report states that they have investigated between four and five hundred cases of murder committed upon Union men, within the past few months: all of which were without excuse, and of which the authorities have taken no notice whatsoever. They also state that there has been a large number more, whose investigation is beyond their power. We acknowledge that we have doubted largely the statements published as to the bloodthirstiness of the late rebels, but this report, from a body of men opposed to the administration, puts the matter beyond a question. It is certain now that Union men are murdered by thousands, in the South, and that no one of them is called to account, by the State authorities, for the crime. If the state organizations will do no better than this, the time has not yet come to entrust them with the power of administering the laws. It makes the heart sick to think that the administration of Mr. Johnson has uniformly encouraged the worst issues of the rebellion, and regularly struck its blows at the life and property of the Union men; whose only crime was that they risked life, and lost property in their defence of the very government which does now all it can to destroy them.
